Damian Marley

After a long day full of Sun God’s intoxicating pleasures, what’s better than strapping on some comfy shoes, grabbing your friends and heading over to RIMAC Field to whet your Marley spirits? Two members of the first family of reggae will be there: Damian Marley (son of reggae legend Bob Marley and Jamaica’s 1977 Miss World Cindy Breakspeare) and brother Stephen, earning his keep behind the drum kit.

Despite many deals with Motown Records, the two Marley brothers have kept their careers underground with several reggae-based groups. Known as “Junior Gong” in the music scene, little Damian strongly advocates his bond with his Jamaican-American cultural background, while older brother Stephen likes to fiddle around with remakes of his father’s greatest hits with other popular artists such as Erykah Badu and Lauren Hill. Stephen is actually more well-known as a songwriter and doesn’t usually boast his inherited Bob-esque smile in the public scene. However, he is making this entrance performance with his baby brother Damian in honor of our great Sun God.

Maybe Damian will even puff out some newly written tunes from his album Halfway Tree and give us a heads up on his low-key musical talents. Seeing as his work has not made a grand entrance into the world of pop, his concert cameo will be a good showcase of the modern generation of reggae.

Come sing along to the colors of yellow, green and red, and if that isn’t a high enough buzz, come mingle in the brew of sweat and head-nodding of fellow UCSD peeps. If you’re not a big reggae fan, you don’t dig the floppy colorful hats, or you are pretty much coming to Sun God to see Ludacris, at least enjoy the mixture of the Empire and the different colors of the Marley legacy as an interesting little twist on the traditions of this wonderful day of drunken merriment. And if you’re looking for any other reason to experience this portion of Sun God — it’ll just be really cool to see two Marleys in less than an hour.
