Upon first glance, Propositions 68 and 70 may appear to be good for California. After all, they both promise to bring the state much-needed revenue for social services. However, behind the smoke and mirrors, these propositions are nothing more than bad legislation aimed at increasing the presence of gambling in California. The real motive behind Proposition 68 is to allow nontribal gaming interests, namely racetracks and card rooms, to open casinos and reap the benefits of the lucrative gambling market, a dangerous hidden agenda that could adversely affect traffic congestion and crime rates. Meanwhile, Proposition 70 is merely a ploy by Indian casinos to increase the number of casinos each tribe can operate, making the increased presence of gambling in major cities inevitable. Vote “no” on both Propositions 68 and 70.
