Spring Quarter Programming
To kick off our recruitment cycle and the upcoming P.R.E.S.S. Referendum vote, The Guardian is hosting programming all throughout Week 1 and 2 to open our community to you! We’re excited to announce a series of events that will immerse you in the world of journalism, with everything from writing workshops to socials to professional panels.
Most events will be held in our office on the second floor of the Old Student Center. You can find a visual for how to get there on the story highlights of our Instagram (@ucsdguardian). Stop by to learn something new! More details to come.
Week 1 Schedule
Wednesday, April 2: Student Media Fest
Where: Old Student Center Courtyard
5:00pm – 7:00pm
The UCSD Guardian’s Student Media Fair is a place for students to learn about and discover the student media on campus, featuring everything from zines to radio to newspapers. Meet the people behind our student media outlets and join us for this night of networking and fun!
Thursday, April 3: Open House

If you’re interested in joining The Guardian, want to learn more about our work and student journalism, or just want a place to hang out, stop by to meet an editor!
12:00pm – 3:00pm: Writing Sections Open House
Interested in writing for The Guardian but not sure where to start? Come meet our writing section editors to learn about what they do and why they do it. Sections editors from all writing sections will be able to tell you what you need to know about joining their team.
3:00pm – 6:00pm: Backend and Creative Sections Open House
Interested in contributing to The Guardian but not sure where to start? Come meet a photo, art, or design editor to talk about all things creative in The Guardian, or talk to a backend editor to find out what happens behind the scenes!
Friday, April 4: Writing Day
Where: The Guardian Office
Whether it be academic essays, a cover letter for a job, or an article for The Guardian, writing is essential everywhere on campus. Join us for a series of writing workshops catered to all your writing-related needs!
11:00am – 12:00pm: Journalistic Style Workshop
Though every article we publish is different, journalistic writing across the board requires a unique set of skills and practices that anyone can learn! In this workshop, our Features Editor will tell you all about how to distinguish journalistic style from other forms of writing, sharing all the tips and tricks you may need to plan and organize an article.
12:30pm – 1:30pm: Personal Narrative Workshop
Expressing your own lived experience, whether everyday or extraordinary, takes focus and skill. Join our Lifestyle team to get advice on writing and editing your stories – and the chance to publish a snippet of your perspective in our next issue!
2:00pm – 3:00pm: Writing as Collaborative with The UCSD Teaching and Learning Commons
Writing is a process done best with feedback, but navigating your voice and vision while incorporating the ideas and advice of collaborators can be difficult. This event, hosted by the Teaching and Learning Commons, will equip you with the skills to express yourself to all the different hands involved in the writing process. This workshop is applicable to writing prompts for academic, professional, personal, and journalistic spheres!
3:30pm – 4:30pm: How to Write an Op-Ed Workshop
Want to know how to submit a guest op-ed, join the opinion section, or flex your knowledge in online discourse? At this workshop, our Opinion editors will be going over the need-to-knows of opinion writing!
5:00pm – 6:00pm: Multimedia Script Workshop
Scripts are an essential part of many forms of media, including YouTube videos, podcasts, Instagram reels, and more. Join our Multimedia team to learn how to put together an engaging and effective script for your projects!

Tuesday, April 8: Law and Ethics Day
Where: The Guardian Office
This series of workshops focuses on the legal side of journalism and the importance of ethical reporting, emphasizing the power of freedom of speech – all lessons that are more important now than ever both in and outside of the world of journalism.
2:00pm – 3:00pm: Law and Journalism Workshop
Come to learn about your legal right to freedom of speech and freedom of press, presented by The Guardian’s News Editors. At a time when freedom of speech is especially vulnerable, not just in the press but for individuals as well, it is especially important to be informed of your rights and legal ways to defend yourself.
3:00pm – 4:00pm: Ethics of The Guardian
Join us for a conversation on the ethical practices and principles guiding The Guardian. Come to learn more, voice your opinions, and ask any questions you may have!
4:00pm – 5:00pm: Ethics in Journalism
Come learn about the intricacies of ethics in journalism, from word choice to font size! Special focus will be given to how we cover sensitive and critical stories in the contemporary world.
Wednesday, April 9: Professional Panel: Behind the Byline (Pre-Professional Prep & Recruitment Mixer)
Where: The Guardian Office
No journalism program? No problem! The Guardian is hosting 5 five local professional journalists to share their experiences and career trajectories with the students of UC San Diego. If you’re interested in pursuing any type of journalism as a career, this panel is for you!

Got an internship interview approaching and not sure where to start? The Guardian’s got your back! Acing an interview is a useful skill to know, whether you’re the interviewer or the interviewee. Come learn the principles of a good interview at our office or online.
7:00pm – 9:00pm: Recruitment Mixer
The Guardian’s staff of over 150 students is a bright, vibrant community, and we know that can be a little intimidating at first. Come meet our staffers, chat up your future editors, and relax and unwind at our Week 2 Social and Recruitment Mixer.
Thursday, April 10: Creative Workshops
Where: The Guardian Office
A picture is worth a thousand words! In this series of workshops, see how The UCSD Guardian’s photographers and artists create images that effectively encapsulate writers’ ideas, the ethics on which they operate, and more.
11:00am – 11:50am: Basics of Photography
Learn about how cameras work, how to operate them, and tips and tricks that photographers use to get good pictures.
12:00pm – 1:00pm: Photojournalism: Ethics & History
Learn the ethics by which The UCSD Guardian’s Photo team operates and the history of photojournalism.
1:00pm – 1:30pm: Q&A
Open floor when attendees are free to ask questions about covered content, the photo team, and a Guardian photographer’s experience with The UCSD Guardian.
2:00pm – 3:30pm: Illustration from Prompts
Learn by doing! Join The UCSD Guardian’s Art team by taking prompts for articles and creating visuals.
4:00pm – 5:30pm: Multimedia Production
Lights, camera, action! From our podcasts to our Instagram reels, join us to learn about the how and why behind The UCSD Guardian’s multimedia content.

The Guardian is run by a volunteer panel of our staff called the Editorial Board. If you want to know anything about our reporting, how The Guardian operates, or discuss the PRESS referendum, drop in any time and ask!
3:00pm – 4:00pm: Covering the Encampment Q&A
In May 2024, The Guardian covered UCSD’s Gaza Solidarity Encampment, including live reporting and a multimedia project with interviews of over a dozen activists. Stop by to ask us all about our experience doing on the ground reporting of this historical UCSD event.
4:00pm – 6:00pm: PRESS Results Wait Party
Join our team as we wait on the verdict of the PRESS referendum’s outcome in the office.
