“”Based on a true story”” – five words that seemingly strew bullshit across any attraction, especially since Hollywood loves to spin a yarn full of inaccuracies to tell a “”better story.””
But wait: Werner Herzog’s directing this? Mr. “”Grizzly Man”” is notoriously shrewd for not wanting to skimp on the facts, not to mention adept at telling both an exciting and moving story. This apolitical yet patriotic action-drama (hence the equally patriotic release date) follows Christian Bale as Dieter Dengler, a German American shot down and captured in Vietnam, only to instigate a giant escape effort. Bale supposedly lost over 55 pounds to accurately portray the disease and torture-ravaged prisoner of war, hearkening back to the indie days when he dropped to 120 pounds for “”The Machinist.”” “”Dawn”” is only set for limited release come July, but with early reports that this one has Oscar written all over it, its run will most likely expand and should be on your radar as the summer action flick that probably contains the least amount of unintelligent dialogue. July 4.
