It’s pretty ridiculous how easy it would have been for late-’80s weird-hop pioneers the Ultramagnetic MCs to re-create the sparse boom-bap beats and wacked-out rhymes that gave their debut album Critical Beatdown such no-sweat genius. Instead, they tackle the 21st century from all the wrong directions. The Best Kept Secret sees Kool Keith (the only member still above water) cranking out the kind of oversexed nonsense he could pen in his sleep over dull, new-millenium party beats, and “Mechanism”” — though better than most of the album — spills over with love handles and beer guts.
