This week’s hour-long A.S. Council meeting was a fresh change from the five-hour meeting at the end of fall quarter, with an extended debate over the athletics referendum.
Surprisingly, the referendum was never mentioned during last night’s session.
During public input, several members of a sorority asked councilmembers to nominate one another to participate in a male pageant to raise money for a charity organization. A.S. President Harry Khanna, Eleanor Roosevelt College Chair Michael Shillington and Revelle College Freshman Senator Ashwin Dighe were nominated. By means of a secret ballot vote, the council chose Dighe.
In the next order of business, Khanna motioned to add a questionnaire to the special election ballot for student input on the RIMAC Annex. The survey would be split into three categories: general, lounge and cafe.
The general section asks students to rate the importance of possible facilities such as commuter lockers, a convenience store, a gift shop, meeting rooms, activity rooms for yoga, cardio and step and an additional weight room.
For lounge areas, the survey asks whether students would like fixed computer stations, study tables, a separate designated quiet study area, a browsing library with newspapers and magazines, casual furniture and 24-hour accessibility.
Options for the cafe include themes of sports, healthy living or beer and wine service. A motion to approve the survey was passed by consensus.
The survey will ask students to rate the importance of the suggestions.
The project will use approximately $10 million of revenue gathered from student fees.
Khanna nominated Roosevelt Senior Senator Erik Rodriguez-Palacios for the position of election manager. The motion passed unanimously.
Vice President of External Affairs Long Pham announced that there will be a table on Library Walk for students to be able to call California state assembly members, senators and the governor to encourage them to buy back the student fee increase for next year.
During question time, Earl Warren College Freshman Senator Cathy Le asked the Roosevelt Student Council senators whether they were selecting an interim freshman senator.
Current Roosevelt Freshman Senator Stephanie Usry is not at UCSD this quarter because she was in a car accident during winter break and is currently recovering in Wyoming.
Warren Senior Senator and Council Speaker Michelle Yetter said that during question time councilmembers can only address cabinet members. The question was then directed to Warren Junior Senator and cabinet member Daniel Palay, who deferred it to Roosevelt senators.
The senators said that the only way that they can start looking for an interim freshman senator is if they impeach Usry for her attendance or receive her resignation.
A decision has yet to be made.
