A Chemical-Friendly Sun God for ’06

    The latest Sun God lineup has a band of brothers, hip-hop revolutionists and one of underground rap’s premier artists.

    My Chemical Romance will join Cypress Hill and Talib Kweli at the 2006 Sun God festival, to take place on May 12. The headlining rock band has enjoyed mainstream success in recent years, especially with their 2004 album Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge.

    The A.S. programming office announced the latest showcase this week, with rock band My Chemical Romance headlining the May 12 concert.The band will be accompanied by Cypress Hill, Talib Kweli, No Use for a Name, Bedouin Soundclash, Boysetsfire and Versus the Mirror.

    My Chemical Romance began playing in New Jersey, but have garnered national attention with their albums, including their 2004 record, Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge, peaking at No. 31 on the Billboard 200.

    The rap group Cypress Hill a pioneering hip-hop group, flourishing alongside rap innovators Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg in the late 1980s to 1990s. Their most successful era hit its peak in 1993, when their second album, Black Sunday, sold more than 2 million records. Since then, the band has been relatively inactive, until 2000, when their album Skull and Bones went platinum twice.

    Kweli’s mainstream popularity has risen in recent years, but his roots lie in Brooklyn’s underground hip-hop scene. By drawing inspiration from Afrocentric rappers, Kweli garnered heavy critical acclaim.

    With partnership with popular artists such Kanye West and Black Eyed Peas, and multiple guest-star appearances on the Dave Chapelle Show, Kweli gained more mainstream exposure.
