Coming off a 9-7 win over Loyola Marymount on Oct. 29, the No. 7 UCSD men’s water polo team hosted No. 10 UC Davis on its senior night in front of 814 fans on Nov. 5.

With every one of the Tritons’ seniors playing and contributing to the 6-4 win, the men extended their overall record to 22-7 with one game remaining in the regular season.

Davis started out strong in the first quarter, putting the first point on the board with a goal from the Aggies’ Conor Dunignan at the 5:32 mark.

Two minutes later, Triton senior Steven Jendrusina tied the score at 1-1 with his 15th goal of the season, while senior Kevin Smoker answered with another goal to give the Tritons the 2-1 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter was marked by only one goal, sophomore Adnan Jerkovic’s 34th of the season, with 4:15 remaining to extend the Tritons’ lead to two goals. Jerkovic began the third quarter with another goal at the 5:44 mark, but the Aggies’ Matt MacLachlan reduced the lead to two with a goal late in the third quarter.

Senior captain Jonathan Hopkins gave the Tritons some breathing room with another Triton goal, his team-leading 70th of the season, increasing the lead to 5-2.

Davis had one last-push effort in the fourth quarter, with the Aggies’ Patrick Jacobsen netting a goal late in the period, but senior Chris Finegold responded with a goal of his own, keeping the three-point deficit intact.

Davis’ David Welch scored one last goal with 24 seconds remaining, giving the Tritons a 6-4 victory over the Aggies.

The Tritons will lose 12 seniors after this season, including goalkeeper Colin McElroy, who had 205 saves this season.

However, the Tritons will have a strong lineup next season with many sophomores and juniors ready to step up when they get the chance.

The Tritons will host their last regular season match against Sunset San Diego on Nov. 11 at 6 p.m.

A week later, the Tritons will head to Los Angeles for the Western Water Polo Association Tournament on Nov. 11.
