Three… Extremes
Oct. 28 – Nov. 3
Landmark Theatres La Jolla
Some people can’t take scary movies. When I rented “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” for my film and sexuality class (don’t ask), my roommate couldn’t watch the whole thing. The poor kid actually covered his eyes as if Leatherface was going to kick open the screen door and grab him, instead. For those that do enjoy the silver-screen gore, creepiness and shit that pops out real fast, “Three… Extremes” is a selection of horror shorts by Japanese, Korean and Hong Kong directors (some previous works include “Oldboy,” “Ichi The Killer” and “Audition”). “Box,” “Cut,” and “Dumplings” make up the depraved trilogy, and oh yes, there will be fingers chopped off. Beck
Oct. 27
RIMAC Arena
Beck Hansen, the original drop out, feeds off his L.A. roots and literally pulls a page out of the books of nearly every musical genre. Beck hit the scene in 1993 with “Loser” and continued to throw things at a wall to see what would stick. The rest is history. Beck took an interesting turn for his latest: He put his past into a blender and created a smoothie called Guero. (A remix album is due in December.) Beck’s unique style has clicked with fans and critics alike, and there’s no reason for him to let up and change now, even if he repeats himself. [JD]
