Sinister plots … evil monsters … a valiant quest … David Bowie in spandex? If that last bit sours you, go ahead and eject that dusty copy of “Labyrinth” from your VCR and reacquaint yourself with Jim Henson’s other sinister-puppet classic. “The Dark Crystal” was released in 1982, but holds up surprisingly well today. Whereas “Labyrinth” becomes a vomit-inducing ride into the bowels of 1986 every time David Bowie bursts into song, “The Dark Crystal” includes no human characters, eliminating the possibilities of excessive sequins or mulletry. What we’re left with instead is a fantasy world filled with puppet-beasts with names like gelflings and skeksis, and a movie that’s best enjoyed in any altered state of consciousness. A word of warning, though. “The Dark Crystal” is scary, especially after one too many trips to the Mandeville staircase. Sure, your 8-year-old nephew would love it, so it isn’t quite bone-chillingly “I-can-see-David-Bowie’s-package” terrifying, but the creepy video cover alone will be enough to keep you from renting it any time soon. Which is fine. “The Dark Crystal” is the midnight movie Oct. 15 at Landmark Theatre La Jolla. Don’t see it alone (and — let’s be honest — don’t see it sober, either).
