This week’s drink tank is dedicated to an urban legend. Most people have at one time heard of the elusive Singapore Sling – the pink drink that mixes eight ingredients to create a curiously delicious concoction. While Grandma will swear she knows the perfect way to create the Sling, few know the proper recipe. We’re here to let you in on one of bartending’s greatest secrets, straight from the vault of the Raffles Hotel, the original slinger. To truly appreciate the Singapore Sling, let’s first examine its history. The Sling was created at the turn of the century by a Chinese bartender, Ngiam Tong Boon, at the Raffles Hotel in Singapore. Originally the drink was created with women in mind. But do not let the pink color and sweet taste deceive you: This drink is potent. The secret to an amazing Sling is Benedictine, a little-known liquor that has a sweet herbal taste.
CAUTION: This drink requires four types of alcohol, most of which are not usually found in your typical dorm-room bar. Don’t let that stop you; invest in these liquors, as they can all be used in a wide variety of tasty drinks.
