“”Identity”” is about ten strangers, all of whom, through different sets of circumstances, end up in a motel together on a stormy night. One by one, however, everyone is killed off leaving the age old question of “”whodunit?”” Additionally, there is a second plotline, where a psychiatrist is trying to convince a courtroom that his patient should not be executed.
What starts out as a seemingly predictable plot line transforms into one filled with fascinating twists. The script is incredibly well done and definitely makes the developments unexpected. Like all horror films, certain characters have you thinking “”You stupid person! Why are you doing that!?”” Of course, this is part of the suspense that the script delivers.
Despite the fact that the script has a double plot, each story is carefully crafted to fit in at exactly the right moment. When the stories finally do intertwine, the moment is precise and ties in perfectly with the way the story is being unraveled. The twist at the end is the most interesting thing about the movie. Like films that have preceded it, such as “”Memento””, the film leaves you thinking about what you just saw — and not in a “”oh my god, I want those two hours of my life back”” kind of way.
The actors carry out the script perfectly. Even seemingly bland actors, such as Amanda Peet, shine in their roles, executing them flawlessly. Especially interesting is John Cusack, who steps away from his last few roles as a romantic lead. Cusack excels as former cop/limo driver Ed who is struggling to figure out the murders and plays his dark role very well. The cast in this ensemble work well off each other, and gets the mood and feel of each character perfectly.
Beyond the script and acting, the cinematography is astounding. The use of camera angles are excellent and keep everything interesting. Through these shots, director James Mangold gives away just enough to make you wonder about what’s going to happen next, but not so much that it’s completely predictable.
Overall, “”Identity”” is definitely one of the best suspense films to come out recently. Captivating and enthralling, this is a movie that is unquestionably worth seeing.
