Looking at the marquee, it might be difficult to figure out who is going to headline the Pop Disaster tour. Any three of the bands could easily headline their own tour, so why come together on one cross-country extravaganza?
Reports from the first date of the tour in Bakersfield, Calif., say quite simply that they put on one hell of a show. Between Jimmy Eat World’s fresh sound, Blink’s well-established notoriety for crazy shows and Green Day’s long history of lighting things on fire, the concert at Coor’s Amphitheatre should be incredible.
Fresh off the release of “”Bleed American,”” Jimmy Eat World, the youngest group of the three, will open up the show and give the audience a good look at a band on their way to the top.
Blink-182 is the second act, and a good example of a band at the very top of their game. With their last three albums being hugely successful, and industry buzz surrounding side project Boxcar Racer, it can only be said that blink-182 is opening for Green Day out of pure respect.
While Green Day’s last albums have failed to rival their mid-career release “”Dookie,”” they have managed to continue releasing successful albums and keep fans frightened and excited with their on-and-off stage antics.
Highlights of the tours opening night in Bakersfield included Blink’s drummer Travis being hoisted from a crane to play what could only be described as an unbelievable drum solo. Green Day invited three audience members on stage to play alone with them on stage. Jimmy Eat World put on a solid show. Pyrotechnics filled the evening.
The only complaint was that the show was too short. Blink played a disappointingly short 50-minute set on the first night of the tour — fans of the local boys can only hope that things will be slightly altered in the band’s hometown.
Arrive on time to the concert, and wear flame-retardant clothing if you have it. The Pop Disaster tour is a great chance to catch three great pop bands before they go up in flames.
