DVD Review: 'Zoolander' tries to strut its comedy

“”I never heard anyone say, ‘Look at the ass on that brain!'””

Such are the wise words of Derek Zoolander, male model extraordinaire and self-proclaimed “”really, really good-looking”” protagonist of the upcoming “”Zoolander”” DVD.

Ben Stiller, who also directed the film, stars as a man who finds himself brainwashed into killing a Malaysian prime minister by an evil conglomerate of fashion moguls that wants to maintain slave labor wages.

While the character of Derek is bust-a-gut funny, the movie’s complicated plot and focus on supporting characters stifle Stiller’s portrayal and, ultimately, the movie’s comedic value.

Fortunately, Stiller and his creative team redeem themselves with the DVD, or as Derek would say, “”DeeViDuh,”” which revolves almost exclusively around the male model superstar character.

Upon pushing the play button, viewers are immediately greeted by Derek’s hilarious introduction of the main menu, in which he proclaims that the scene selection button exists to help viewers skip over scenes without “”really good-looking people.””

Thanks to the greater focus on Derek, the supplementary material on the DVD matches and even sometimes exceeds the humor of the film itself. While the deleted and extended scenes are nothing to drool over, the VH-1 Fashion Award skits that inspired the movie are belly-laughers, as are the included promotional spots and MTV “”Cribs”” shorts.

The full-length audio commentary by Stiller and the other two writers of the movie drags, but is lifted by the trio’s discussion of cut cameos and the Stiller family, three members of which have prominent roles in the movie.

In a technical respect, the DVD is behind the times; there are no included subtitle or audio tracks for non-English-speaking viewers. Ironically, at one point on the DVD, Derek says “”models know lots of languages because they have to work all over the world.”” He is of course referring to his knowledge of Pig Latin.

While seriously lagging in audio options, the DVD does excel in the arena of color fidelity; thanks to top-of-the-line tone accuracy, Derek’s elaborate outfits are able to shine in their outrageous and comically repulsive glory.

Because of the nearly ubiquitous focus on Derek, fans of Stiller’s quirky comedic style shouldn’t hesitate for a second to buy this DVD. For everyone else, a rental is probably enough (or too much).
