Ski & Snowboard
The ski and snowboard club competed in league regionals Feb. 16 through Feb. 17 and Feb. 23 through Feb. 24 in Tahoe.
For the Feb. 16-17 competition, Amy Sage dominated the women’s events, placing first in boardercross and giant slalom while incidentally beating many of her male competitors. Sage will represent UCSD next weekend at Nationals in Waterville Valley, N.H.
The next weekend, skiers were in near-blizzard conditions for their slalom event. Sierra Bourne took fifth, however, and Danielle Crockett was next for UCSD placing 13th.
In the giant slalom, held Feb. 24, Bourne was again the top finisher for UCSD with sixth place and Crockett came in eighth.
Bourne, due to her strong showing, came within one second of qualifying for nationals.
Rugby
Men’s rugby was bagled by Cal Poly San Luis Obispo last Saturday 48-0. After playing close for most of the first half, Cal Poly exploded for three quick tries at the end of the second quarter of play for a 20-0 lead.
The second half brought more of the same as Cal Poly’s quick feet and slick ball-handling allowed it to keep UCSD off-balance and unable to mount any sort of offensive or defensive pressure.
Ice Hockey
Ice hockey is riding back-to-back wins heading into nationals, which will be held in Alpharetta, Ga.
UCSD defeated Sacramento State twice and in the game before that had managed a 4-4 tie with UC Davis.
UCSD came out strong against UC Davis and took the lead, but 10 hours on a bus to Northern California took its toll, and the legs of the players just were not there in the second half.
Against Sacramento State it was a different story and San Diego took the first game 12-1 in a laugher. UCSD then outshot the Hornets 63-7 in the second game for a 6-0 win.
Women’s Lacrosse
Women’s lacrosse faced off against No. 1-ranked Cal Poly San Luis Obispo over the weekend and Cal Poly lived up to its ranking, posting a 17-4 victory.
UCSD expected a hard match and got it in Cal Poly’s defense, which stymied the UCSD attack all afternoon. Pilar Apalisok scored all four of UCSD’s goals for the game.
Badminton
UCSD badminton confronted UC Irvine over the weekend and lost 9-6. UC Irvine was the top-ranked team in the country last year.
Dede Davis and Stephanie Obayashi won their singles matches and grabbed a doubles victory to keep UCSD afloat in the match.
