10. “Girls Chase Boys” by Ingrid Michaelson

Who doesn’t love Ingrid Michaelson? She’s cute, she writes sharply clever songs, she makes awesome, mischievous music videos that gleefully stomp all over those heinous gender and sexuality restrictions. In her words from a NewNextNow.com article, “Girls Chase Boys” is about the “idea that, no matter who or how we love, we are all the same. … We all chase each other, and in the end we are all chasing after the same thing: love.” It’s simple, maybe a little cheesy, but it works so well and it’s an incredibly relevant message. Given the battles over sexuality and women’s rights this past year and the rising awareness of such oppression, this song hits home for many of us. What Michaelson does is excellently and graciously embody these issues in a quirky, energetic single that is important more for its reach and its message of equality and a universal love.
