As we greedily scavenge the shelves (or torrents) for the best of obscure foreign rap, we often forget what lies just above and below our borders. Canada hasn’t exactly proven itself to be worth the effort, with a few exceptions — the foremost being singer/songwriter/rapper K-OS, whose hip-hop is brought alive by a surprising vocal range and the thick resonance of live, seldom-looped instrumentation. And though his lyrics are somewhat throwaway (as usual), “Funky Country,”” the bonus track on his U.S. release of Atlantis: Hymns for Disco, epitomizes this fullness, with tambourines and a Mos Def-worthy R&B hook.
