A&E’s weekly song pick: Covet’s “shibuya”

The UCSD Guardian’s A&E team viciously scours the corners of the internet in search of ground-breaking and revolutionary music in order to provide Tritons with the best of the best. Not really, but here’s music we think is fun.

Covet’s “shibuya” is a musical manifestation of swirling leaves in autumn — a rippling song whose instruments bustle and breathe. Yvette Young, the band’s guitarist and primary songwriter, effortlessly strings ethereal riffs together with her unique playing style, which is a lovely mix of tapping, pulling, and sliding. The drums are airy and almost careless in their perfection, and the bass is the warm yet playful heartbeat of the track. Covet combines the signature intricacy of math rock with Midwest emo catharsis to create colorful, pensive instrumentals that I always crave during the fall. Ideal for chilly walks across campus, long study sessions into the night, or just easy listening, “shibuya” calls out into the noise while resting easy in the beauty of the mundane.
