3. “Goddess” by Banks

Jillian Banks’ dark debut, “Goddess,” was a risky release. Yes, coupling hip-hop beats and evocative vocals falls short of innovation these days, and the alternative pop scene certainly seems to be spitting out one sulky songstress after another. (Think Lana Del Rey’s pouty siren calls or Lorde’s moody, beat-driven teenage musings.) Because the makeup of Banks’ songs doesn’t stray far from the haunting anthems of her melancholy predecessors, her debut risked anonymity.

However, “Goddess” boasts an intimate connection with listeners that elevates it above similar debuts in its genre. Amid synthesizer pads and electronic pulses, Banks is not afraid to bare an emotional nakedness that resonates deeper than the generalized stories told by many contemporary artists. She counters these confessional undertones with formidable lyrics to create an attractive paradox of strength and vulnerability. The result is a rare intimacy that only confirms Banks’ “Goddess” was a risk worth taking.
