Candidates for both A.S. Council and the college councils announced their campaigns and slate affiliations for the 2013–2014 school year at a March 7 meeting.
All but one campuswide slate feature a current councilmember running for re-election. Slates exclusive to the college councils include Marshall Strides and Revelle United, among others, and will not sponsor candidates for campuswide positions.
Current Campuswide Senator Caesar Feng will run for A.S. Council president on his slate, FLOW With the FENG. The slate has adapted the logo of last year’s TIDE, which won almost 60 elected positions — including that of president.
Another slate, Keep it REAL, features Muir Senator Andrew Buselt for president as well as Sixth Senator Linda Le for vice president of student life. Keep it REAL includes candidates for campuswide positions, as well as those campaigning for Muir College and Sixth College councils.
One Voice offers current Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs Samuel Chang for president on a platform that states, “one campus, one dream, one legacy.”
Triton’s Choice includes three current councilmembers vying for higher leadership positions, including Associate Vice President of Student Advocacy Courtney Hill for president, Associate Vice President of Athletic Relations Sarah Snook for vice president of student affairs and Associate Vice President of Environmental and Social Justice Vanessa Garcia for vice president of external affairs.
The slate UNITED presents Revelle Chair Meena Kaushik for president and Associate Vice President of College Affairs Leonard Bobbitt for vice president of student life.
Two final slates, whose platforms include a mockery of the rhetoric used by the other slates, are graduating Campuswide Senator Brad Segal’s slate, Mind the Minder, and its affiliate, YOLO ILLUMINATI.
One of the first issues facing the new council will be the decision to allow or disallow the continuation of joint campaigning between A.S. Council and the college councils. The amendment to the election code was previously tabled until spring.
Voting will take place through TritonLink during Week 2 of spring quarter. According to the A.S. Council elections website, a full list of slates and candidate information will be available in the near future.
