UC San Diego’s Office of the Executive Vice-Chancellor released a bulletin to all staff, students, and personnel at approximately 3:15 p.m., informing the community of a death that occurred in Geisel Library earlier on Wednesday, Nov. 6. The library is closed for the remainder of the day.
“Emergency responders, including police, are currently managing the situation. There is no threat to the campus community,” the email reads.
The bulletin states that “the individual was not enrolled as a student.” The circumstances surrounding the death are currently unknown.
The email release follows a Community Alert sent to the UCSD community around 1:45 p.m. referring to the same incident.
Geisel Library closed at approximately 12:30 p.m. and began an evacuation of students, staff, and personnel shortly thereafter. Evacuation concluded at around 1:15 p.m.
Four police cars from the University of California Police Department were parked near the entrance of Geisel Library. They are estimated to have arrived at approximately 11:45 a.m. Triton CORE, a mobile response team that supports students experiencing behavioral health crises, also had vehicles on the scene.
At least seven members of the administration were present, blocking off entrance to the library building and informing students approaching the area about the closure. Students were redirected to the Sally T. WongAvery Library and Price Center, which will remain open.
Members of the administration present were unable to provide comment for The UCSD Guardian. University Communications has declined to provide any additional information at this time.
This is a developing story. The Guardian will continue to follow and update as we learn more information.
