6. “Lost in the Dream” by The War on Drugs
The Philly indie rockers of The War on Drugs dropped their third release this year, serving as a culmination of frontman Adam Granduciel’s cerebral, rather than physical, approach toward music.
Indeed “Lost in the Dream” is almost a meta approach toward making music, evoking the sounds of Springsteen, Dylan and the legends of Americana in layers of heavy yet seamlessly engineered sound. It channels its chaos into a tightly-knit throwback to rock ‘n’ roll as seen through the eyes of us listeners who’ve spent our lives absorbing it as culture.
“Lost in the Dream” is perhaps the only album this year that truly feels important as a nostalgic view on America’s music and its breakdown. And even if it did not ask such questions, its reverb sounds are the perfect accompaniment for nighttime drives.
