1. Over the Garden Wall

A little on the underground side of the entertainment spectrum, this adorable, witty and haunting animated miniseries from the kooky minds of “The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack” and “Adventure Time” is delicious proof that serial animation is a seriously underestimated medium. The whimsical Cartoon Network show follows two brothers lost in a forest, but the boys and the forest are not what they seem, and there’s a dark Beast afoot. With humor that sways between gently satiric and downright cute, a magically eerie atmosphere and an absolutely gorgeous fall-inspired palette, “Garden Wall” masterfully unfolds a clever plot and displays a refreshing amount of trust in its viewers. It’s an adult-minded series masquerading as kid’s television, like the writers knew deep down that their true audience would be the children of the ‘90s who grew up on Cartoon Network classics. What that self-awareness produces is a surprisingly intelligent, heartfelt and subversive must-see fairytale.
