5. Gone Girl

On the day of her fifth wedding anniversary, Amy Dunne (Rosamund Pike) disappears from her home. All clues point to her husband, Nick (Ben Affleck), as the perpetrator of her kidnapping and possible murder.

What follows is, in the hands of David Fincher, one of the tightest thrillers of recent years, never giving the audience any easy clues or expectations about its sudden changes. But what ultimately makes it one of the most intriguing films of the year is how hard it is to pin down and not merely in terms of its constantly fluctuating plot. Theoretically, it could function as an examination of gender relationships, fulfilling its role as a delightfully terrible date-flick, or as a very funny black comedy or anything in between. It’s thrilling to watch a film that refuses to give its audience exactly what it desires and should be recognized as a supreme achievement.
