10. “Remedy” by Old Crow Medicine Show

Modern Americana music is based on stolen ideas from songs written as far back as the 1800s, so since Old Crow Medicine Show won’t make something that comes across as modern, they made “Remedy,” which sounds timeless. Most of the tracks, like “Firewater” and “Doc’s Day” would sound just as appropriate played in a saloon in the Gold Rush days of California as they would at full blast out of your car’s speakers next summer.

The band hits on a lot of conventional topics, like alcoholism and rural life, as well as less conventional ones, like having sex in a conjugal prison trailer. But whatever they’re playing, it’s filled to the brim with lively violin licks, honking harmonica and blazing banjo solos. And it’s fun — don’t forget that. In times where listening to “quality” modern music can feel like a chore (looking at you, Swans), here is something simple, enjoyable and decidedly masterful.
