The video, which inexplicably featured Eddie Murphy, was certainly entertaining, but if you need a ’90s-era Eddie/Michael fix, why would you pick “Remember the Time” over a gem like “Whatzupwitu”?
Serious matters eventually resurfaced, with Campuswide Senator Matthew Mayeda reporting on the proposed SHIP changes that have been circulating around the UC SHIP Advisory Board and UCOP.
Mayeda projects that fee increases will happen, no matter the decision from the higher-ups. He expects a $300 yearly increase for undergraduates and a $1,500 increase for graduate students.
Our campuswide health care habits are partly to blame for SHIP’s struggle to alleviate the deficit, because for every bump and bruise, we tend to run to Scripps for treatment. And though we only pay a relatively small percentage of our bill out-of-pocket, the pricey hospital has been driving SHIP further into its multimillion-dollar debt.
Silly Tritons, wanting the best in medicine.
Mayeda recognized the logic of students seeking care at Scripps and reported that another solution is to increase students’ co-pays from 10 percent to 30 percent for these hospitals.
“We want rich benefits, but ones that are tightly controlled,” Mayeda said. “We’re working hard for that.”
Mayeda did not attend the last SHIP Advisory Board meeting because he injured his leg. Our universe is obvs a hipster — so ironic.
Council continued the meeting with a proposal to establish a shadowing process for associate vice presidents. Wading through some dense and highly political language eventually yields that a crop of “designates” will tail the outgoing councilmembers for several weeks to learn the intricacies of the job. The designate will presumably take over for the outgoing person after their term.
Councilmembers expressed concern that this resolution strengthens the “A.S. bubble” rather than popping it. Other members wanted to expand the resolution to include presidents and VPs rather than just AVPs.
During the debate, Campuswide Senator Summer Perez chimed in to ask if council was in quorum. For those of you who aren’t up to par in your parliamentary terminology, a quorum is the number of individuals needed to validate a meeting. Coincidentally, this requirement was met with my presence alone.
Council eventually voted to pass the language of the resolution with many amendments, including one that would mandate a review process for the designates. Debating a resolution and agreeing on its language, all in one night? I realize it’s two weeks before the ends of your terms, but way to go, council. Better late than never.
