Dear Editor,
I want to congratulate this year’s UCSD graduates for earning a college degree. There will be employers seeking you and offering less than honest wages to take advantage of the current economic conditions.
Most of you will have college loans to pay off and will work whatever jobs you can get. Some of you might become engineers, financial products salesman or may even be bureaucrats. This isn’t a bad thing. It puts food on your plate and pays the bills.
The question I want you all to ask yourselves is: Are you willing to risk your livelihood for what you believe in?
Not all jobs are created equal. Thousands of people have had jobs to perform specific purposes. How many lives were lost in German concentration camps during World War II from people ‘just doing their job?’ How did the bus driver react when Rosa Parks didn’t move out of her seat?
We live in a dynamic society. It’s still okay to speak out.
You’re going to make decisions into your adulthood that are very difficult. Your college experience will help you make better-informed decisions. Your debt-laden piece of paper with facsimile signature won’t.
My advice is to go forth and start your own businesses. Don’t be afraid to fail. Use your education. Clean our planet and embrace the challenge of doing what you believe in.
