Composed of pool-party crasher Pigeon John and his good pal Flynn, Rootbeer’s unhinged goofiness is caught somewhere between old-school Black Eyed Peas and cheap-shot hooks (when Fergie climbed on board). The duo’s 2009 Pink Limousine EP is 20 minutes of straight whiplash, and its title track is predictably over the top with a repetitive chorus turned whoopfest ‘mdash; less funk and more frolic. Likewise, the beat tries for unfussy and ends up toddlers with silverware, albeit nice and ’80s.
‘So Good’ finds Pigeon doing what he does best ‘mdash; speak-rapping schoolboy worship for a lady friend (‘She’s the sunshine/ I’m the moonlight/ We need each other like a blanket on a cold night’). But then, a strangling hook squelches all the groove in one deflating grip: ‘Feels so good/ Feels so great/ Feels so wonderful to be with you.’ Over and over again. Yeah ‘mdash; not feeling it.
