The North County Community Services food bank announced last
week that it had expanded its freezer capacity by over 30 percent in order to
accommodate growing demands from the
community.
NCCS Director of Community Relations Tim Ney said that the
expansion was needed to sustain continuing food-bank services on an appropriate
scale.
“As the only food bank in
we are effectively streamlining our system to serve a larger population,” Ney
said in a statement. “Over the past two years, food distribution has been
increased by a palpable 33 percent during 2005-06 and 32 percent for the year
ended
Ney also cited a recent UCLA study which revealed that a
large percentage of
households are often unable to afford enough food. The
702,000 pounds of food during 2006-2007. Nearly all of the distributed food was
donated by locally organized food drives.
