9. “Red Eyes” by The War on Drugs

“Red Eyes” by War on Drugs is undeniable proof that Haim wasn’t just a highly entertaining fluke from 2013: the ‘80s are making a comeback. This song has all the hallmarks of classic ‘80s pop: the not-quite overwhelming reverb around a suave voice, the smooth dance beat, the head-bobbing guitar riffs, the warm, dreamy synth, the lazy fade-out. There is, however, a notable lack of gated reverb on the drums, giving it a more modern alternative flavor and keeping the sound from going over the edge into parody territory. “Red Eyes” is undeniably catchy, bringing in outdated elements that picky modern listeners might consider cheesy and making them accessible. And it effortlessly accomplishes the most basic goal of any great ‘80s hit — it entirely seduces you with its unapologetic charm and forces on you the inexplicable desire to live out “Footloose.”
