3. “Close Your Eyes (And Count to Fuck)” by Run the Jewels

Of all the songs off of the year’s most inflammatory album, this is the one with “fuck” in the title, in case that didn’t catch your eye. Another tidbit: The featured artist, Zack de la Rocha of Rage Against the Machine, had a debut album in 1992 with a picture of a burning monk on the cover and a hit called “Killing in the Name.” So you might need to strap in for this one.

The whole track is damning, going after for-profit prisons, corrupt policemen and established religion, with each line just as enraged and badass as the last. Underneath all of this is de la Rocha in a sampled chanting, the center of El-P’s gritty beat. Zack de la Rocha delivers a final verse, making high-brow jazz references while giving a big middle finger to snitches and war profiteers alike. A path of destruction behind them, the three finish the song with a grin and a gun.
