7. “No Rest for the Wicked” by Lykke Li

If Lykke Li establishes anything with her single “No Rest for the Wicked,” it’s that she’s fluent in heartbreak. Her flawless translation of her anguish rivals even the heart-wrenching cries of Adele. For an artist who typically embellishes her songs with signature coos, Li’s recent hit is out of character. Powerful, swooping vocals join thundering drums in the chorus to constitute “No Rest for the Wicked”
a power ballad worthy of 2014’s top 10.

Li doesn’t completely abandon her old tricks, however. Her single maintains tenderness in quieter, piano-accompanied verses that recall her bold vulnerability. The piano coupled with thundering drums and tender pleas transform into emotionally distant revelations, creating a fascinating contrast between detachment and intimacy. Lykke Li’s haunting “No Rest for the Wicked” boasts a pulsating anthem that only confirms her new sound suits her.
