4. “Shake It Off” by Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift’s “Shake it Off ” was the pop anthem of 2014. You sang along to it — ironically, unconsciously or with full, unabashed enthusiasm. You danced to it — yes, bobbing your head to the car radio counts. And you talked about it — how could you not? Swift’s catchy single was everywhere (except for Spotify), and it was nearly impossible to avoid taking sides: Maybe you skipped it because you just aren’t a fan of bubblegum pop on principle, or perhaps you fully embraced T-Swizzle’s 2014 takeover. But regardless of how you felt about “Shake it Off,” Swift isn’t about to let a negative review get to her. Her single rejects her haters as she drastically cuts ties with her country roots. If Swift’s aim was to create a catchy hit that would dismiss scrutiny, then she’s surpassed that goal with a single that has easily dominated 2014.
