California Bookstore Day, May 3

California Bookstore Day, May 3

California Bookstore DayThe UCSD Bookstore, along with nearly 100 other independent bookstores across California, are banding together to put on the first ever California Bookstore Day on May 3.

To kick off the festivities, book buyer Seth Marko will host a book chat with free coffee at 10:30 a.m. After that, the kids can enjoy a California-themed storytime at 11 a.m., followed by craft time at 11:30 a.m. with bear masks and other coloring activities.

If anyone recalls Shia LeBouef’s breakdown via twitter — think, “I AM NOT FAMOUS ANYMORE,” tweeted several times in a row — then you will definitely want to see Scotch Wichmann speak at 12:30 p.m. Wichmann wrote “Two Performance Artists Kidnap Their Boss and Do Things with Him,” and his performance art was made famous by LeBouef’s plagiarism.

At 2 p.m., critically acclaimed comic novelist, Jincy Willett will be talking about and signing her latest book, “Amy Falls Down.”

There will be several books printed only for California Bookstore Day from authors such as Neil Gaiman, Michael Pollan and Lemony Snicket. If you need a new book, or Wichmann and Willett persuade you to give theirs a chance, all general books — i.e. not textbooks, unless you can buy that book in general books — will be 25 percent off all day.

Throughout the day, the Bookstore will be announcing literary trivia for patrons to try to win prizes. There will be live music played throughout the day by local San Diego artists Scott Paulson and the Teeny-Tiny Pit Orchestra.

At the Library Walk entrance local food truck, Killer Street Tacos, will be serving up tacos all day.

Come out and show support for your local independent bookstore, and celebrate the continuation of brick-and-mortar bookstores across the state.
