UC, Pepper Spray Victims Reach Settlement in Lawsuit

Each of the 21 plaintiffs will receive $30,000 and will all receive a handwritten apology note from UC Davis Chancellor Linda Katehi.

A settlement agreement was apparently reached sometime last month. The funds to cover the cost of the settlement will come from a UC self-insurance fund.

The settlement comes 10 months after an Occupy movement event at UCD turned ugly when campus police officer Lt. John Pike, who has since left the force, was recorded deliberately spraying protesters in the face with pepper spray. In April, a task force headed by former state Supreme Court Justice Cruz Reynoso found that UC campus police violated protocol during the Nov. 18, 2011 event.
